Very few people appreciate this, but the overall success of a first-class portrait sculpture depends almost completely on not necessarily the head but the chest and shoulders. The thing is, a portrait sculpture - while it undoubtedly centres attention on the face and head - will always include the chest and shoulders, because if it didn't it might give the impression of a disembodied head.
